Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
