{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces close call with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials ran across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation took place on the third lap when safety workers were seen on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to replace his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track track officials can be authorized to just dash across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is actively examining the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was notified that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send marshals were withdrawn and a caution signal was shown in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred following that moment"
