The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Romance

Throughout this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only a bit more interested in the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the hideous gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Connection and Common Enemy

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the other. Fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find very many children’s animations aimed at the kind of audience that is beginning to have early romances, but are not mature enough for whatever teenagers view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
