Youth Discovered Deceased Following False Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old boy was found dead only a few days after being wrongly accused of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
Kai Lloyd's parents found his remains in his bedroom at his Flintshire home on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Start
The inquest heard how his parent got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if her son was her offspring. The communication stated: "Inform him thanks for burgling my flat."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the media, claiming her infant's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a allegation which was untrue.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from authorities later determined the alleged burglary victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was not stolen in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed stolen remains attracted online comments, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.
Emotional Health Impact
She added that Kai had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views really mattered to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.
Police said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His parent said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she talked to him about the supposed burglary, she said her child told her he had gone into the house because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom anytime he wanted, but denied taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied digitally after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that one young adult urged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he died, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She described him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is totally shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The inquest heard from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys talking that the student had been detained and that was the first I learned".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she rang Kai's parents' landline and left a message saying she had communicated to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his family said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Lead coroner told the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his interview he was freed while investigations proceeded."
The coroner concluded: "Exists no evidence that the acts or omissions of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is not possible to determine his intent."
